The Skolelinux / DebianEdu desktop

This is default desktop for a student/pupil.
The K-menu button
This button will opens a menu with all the software you can start sorted by category. Similiar to the start menu from Windows.
The user home directory button
This button launches a file browser in the user's home directory. This is the place the user can store his/her files.
Iceweasel button

This button launches Iceweasel which is the default web browser, it is a rebranded version of Firefox that is capable of doing all things you can do with Firefox.
The OpenOffice launcher button

This a button launches the OpenOffice Writer which is the Word Processor in the OpenOffice office suite. From here can write documents and easily start creating presentations, spreadsheets, images etc as well.
Educational software
GCompris
GCompris is a collection of educational programs intended for users between 2-10 years. The package contains more than 100 different activities, ranging from exploration of the computer, learning the use of keyboard and mouse, reading and writing activities, algebra and time learning the simulation of the coupling of electric components.
There is also a simple drawing program and a program to create simple animation films.

KTouch
Program for training of touch typing. Both speed and error percentage are considered, the student can also get statistics on the progress. It can be differentiated with different levels of for each pupil, different requirements to get to the next level, etc. It is also easy to create your own
exercises based on your choice of letters and word.
KAlgebra
KAlgebra is an advanced mathematical calculator, which can display the function expression graphic - in both 2D and 3D.
Kig
Kig is a program for exploring geometric structures. The program can be used to construct various functions, angles, triangles, circles and other geometric shapes.
Kgeography
A program for learning of geography, it contains completed exercises with the location of capitals, countries, maps, etc. If you are a little firm on the data and drawing, you can add new maps with new exercises as well.
Celestia
Explore the solar system, planets, galaxies and stars in real time, see where the ISS (international space station)is located right now.

Pictures and video tools
Stop Motion
Stop Motion is a program for creating animated film of still images. Use images from digital cameras, webcam or drawings, and put them together into a movie. Stop Motion is also integrated with Gimp, so you can edit individual pictures in the film directly in Gimp.
Scribus
Create professional brochures and printed material with this powerful tool.
Gimp
Gimp is a powerful image processing program for processing digital images from the camera and create digital images from scratch.
The program is similar application such as Adobe PhotoShop, but the menu structure is quite different from PhotoShop. So if you are familiar with PhotoShop, it may take a little time to get used to Gimp, but with little patience you will get to enjoy functionality and the possibility of extensions using a wide range of plugins.
Digikam
Digikam is a program to organize and manage digital photos. Download images from camera, organize your images, add comments, sort in different albums, make calendars. The program can also be used for editing of images with features such as color correction, filter effects, and red-eye removal.
Kino
Video Editing is no problem with this powerful non-linear DV editor. Load your video over FireWire, cut and edit movie, add effects and sounds along the way, and When you are finished, export the movie to mpeg or burning it like a dvd.
Blender
Blender provides a broad spectrum of modeling, texturing, lighting, animation and video post-processing functionality in one package. Through it's open architecture, Blender provides cross-platform interoperability, extensibility, an incredibly small footprint, and a tightly integrated workflow. Blender is one of the most popular Open Source 3D graphics application in the world.
Aimed world-wide at media professionals and artists, Blender can be used to create 3D visualizations, stills as well as broadcast and cinema quality videos, while the incorporation of a real-time 3D engine allows for the creation of 3D interactive content for stand-alone playback.
Inkscape
An Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X, using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format.
Inkscape supports many advanced SVG features (markers, clones, alpha blending, etc.) and great care is taken in designing a streamlined interface. It is very easy to edit nodes, perform complex path operations, trace bitmaps and much more. We also aim to maintain a thriving user and developer community by using open, community-oriented development
Sound editing tools
Rosegarden
Rose Garden is a sound editing program for pc. Along with a synthesizer (hardware or software) you can compose, edit, extract notation from what you have written, or write notation directly and get the played. Rose Garden is also a digital studio for audio and midi which can be used for recording music via a sound card. Used often in Combined with Audacity.
Audacity
Record audio from microphone, edit, add on effects, combine multiple shots, the possibilities are many.
Hydrogen
An advanced drum machine program Hydrogen aims to be a professional yet intuitive application for creating Drum - patterns. A wide range of drum and cymbal sounds with more combined in patterns that can be cut and pasted and copied to an entire song with embedded solo parties.
Suit the functions to "human doing" expression with small irregularities in the patterns and hardness of battles. Drum patterns can be converted to different formats, and combined with both Audacity and the Rosegarden to make complete recordings with several different instruments and song.
OpenOffice - The office suite
Writer - The word processor
Writer is the word processor in OpenOffice package. It is a powerful program that has all the features one needs for modern word processing, and much more.Efficient word processing is a basic skill which is helpful in all subjects.
Calc - The spreadsheet
Calc is the spreadsheet in OpenOffice, and can be used for accounting and statistical analysis as well as the learning of mathematics. Advanced functions can be inserted into cells in the spreadsheet, and used for sophisticated analysis of the facts and figures material.
Use of spreadsheets is a natural part of mathematics subject in school, and knowledge is necessary for completion of the examination in mathematics.
Impress - The presentation tool
Create stunning presentations of projects and teaching material with OpenOffice Impress. It is also possible to add sound and video.You can create fancy transitions between slides, time a speech exactly with the images or click through the photos manually. You can also add audio on the slides.
Draw - The drawing tool
OpenOffice also contains a separate drawing tools specifically designed to create good shapes for use in the other parts of OpenOffice. You can create complex figures based on completed items, or you can draw in freehand.
Base - The database tool
For more advanced users OpenOffice also have a separate database tools. Base allows you to use intuitive graphical tool for creating and working with databases, or you can use SQL.
OpenClipart - The clipart collection
OpenClipart is a large collection of photos and shapes for use in documents and drawings. The collection integrates completely with Open Office, and the images are available in OpenOffice gallery. Scroll through characters, and drag the shape you want directly to the document.
Learning management system
Moodle
Moodle is a Course Management System (CMS), also known as a Learning Management System (LMS) or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). It is a Free web application that educators can use to create effective online learning sites.
Moodle is not installed by default, but is very easy to install in Skolelinux / DebianEdu.
